Hello Giovanni

Light Steam Power magazine did a few articles on the Stanley LSR.
Scans are now available from [www.steamcarassociation.org.uk] Check under A - Steam Cars

Thanks a million!
They have 47 pages for the Rocket but just ordering the drawings and photos.
I am wondering if they accept American checks or should it be a money order?
Thanks again,
Giovanni

I have noticed that most over seas businesses (and clubs) prefer using Paypal. Guaranteed payment plus currency conversions are all automatically handled by Paypal at the time of the transaction.

I seem to have come to another dead-end!:

Thanks for your email. I do not have any drawings or information on The Rocket. The Virtual Steam Car Museum has a few postcards and standard photos, but nothing in great detail.
There is a reproduction of The Rocket that was trotted out and run at the Centennial of Speed in 2006 in Ormond Beach. I think the car is in the NASCAR museum, but I am not sure.
I’m sorry that I don’t have more information for you.
Very best wishes!

In 2006, I worked on the Stanley rocket repro for its centennial showing. Ron Hardwig and I finished putting the smoke bonnet back together and then insulated the smoke bonnet with dip lag. Finishing the plumbing and installing the gauges were our last tasks completed on it. The rocket that we worked on is about a 2/3 scale model of the original and it ran well at the land speed record centennial. The repro rocket uses a 10 hp Stanley engine. It is now back on display at the Daytona Speedway's NASCAR museum.

Hi Pat,
How fortunate that you were part of the build team!
I am hoping to find the plumbing and engine components drawings, as well as the body drawings to build an accurately detailed 1/4 scale live-steam model.
I have been told that the NASCAR Daytona museum is closed.
I have been trying to contact them but not successful.
Can you give me anymore info?
P.S.
Just found this!

I would be very surprised if the Daytona NASCAR museum would be closed. It is a very large museum for racing history and the museum has been around for a very long time. I was not on the rocket model build team, but I was more like being on a rocket model "resurrection" team. Brent Campell was our leader on getting the rocket model running again. The rocket repro was built about 15 years earlier by a hobbiest like you. He had previously passed on and the rocket model was a tribute to the builder's genius and to the Stanley speed record of 1906. The rocket model was a good running visual example of the original rocket of 1906. I am sure that there were many details on the model that artistic license was used for the sake of convience in building a scaled sized running replica.

Pat,
Your restorations are brilliant!
Jim Merrick said that it was closed.
I hope that I was hearing this correctly and not misunderstanding?
Maybe someone can elaborate on the story?

Kind Regards,
Giovanni

I have everything except the chassis and body drawings.
I would love to see the high-resolution drawings.
I am getting ready to fabricate the 1/4 scale body in aluminum sheet.
I'm using a pneumatic metal planishing hammer to shape the upper canoe shaped body sections.I have considered making molds to form fiberglass body sections but like the idea of fire-proof metal.
I have been searching for the make of original tires to make a rubber mold.
I want to use titanium oxide rubber compound for white tires.
The tires will fit on a 7" wheel and have an outside diameter of 8.5".
I'm machining the wire spoke wheels using heavy-wall aluminum tubing and the hubs using bronze. The wire spokes are made from 316L stainless steel wire.
Thanks,
Giovanni

In 2006, the 10 hp Rocket replica at Ormond Beach had a fiberglass body. One would have never known it was fiberglass. It was amazingly heavy during assembly, as Ron Hardwig and I had to man handle it all by ourselves.

You would never guess by looking at the recreation Rocket that is was GRP.
I'm thinking that a 48" body in aluminum or fiberglass would be very similar in weight.
I am getting a price quote to mold the upper body section.

Do you have high-resolution drawing?
These drawings will not enlarge without getting fuzzy.
I'm dying to see the details in the drawings!
Here is a fellow that may make the upper body sections in aluminum sheet.
I'm going to build the Wogglebug, too.
His shop is nearby.

Hi Pat and others...I believe the Rocket is a bit older than you have mentioned. In 1991 it was housed in the "Birthplace of Speed" Museum in Ormond Beach. This was a quite small museum and would I not be surprised if it has long since been closed. Somewhere I believe I have a 35mm print that I took of it during that visit. I'll see if I can locate it.

Thanks Bob,
I would like to see some photos, especially the inside of the body and engine bay.
I have been told that the Rocket is in the closed NASCAR Daytona Museum.
The Rocket was on loan to the museum from the City of Ormond Beach, Florida.
Thanks, again
