Hex or square nuts

Hi, I'm trying to figure out where I should be using square or Hex nuts on my 1909 Stanley. I guess it isn't a huge issue but it is bugging me! As far as i can make out, the nuts on the spring shackles should be square - some old ones I have are. Where I am not sure is nuts on the wheel hubs. I've seen some photos which appear to show square, others show hex, but I'm not sure what is original. Is there any general rule for which should be used where on various locations on the car, or the year of manufacture? Only a small issue but hope someone can shed some light on it.

Thanks

Jeff

On my EX I had original hubs to start with 1907, they had large size hex nuts. The shackles are square heaver then are common today but you can still get them.

Square nuts are correct on R,M,U and E2 which I can personally verify.

If you want the car to look original use square nuts. Modern nuts stick out like a sore thumb. It worked for stanley. Allen
