Hi,,,The Clark engine is item # 22 in the Garage sale,,
Clark was a early engine builder,,,marine as well as auto,,There is a small pic of a Clark car in one of Clymer's auto books Address was Freeport St, Boston Ma, as I recall,,
This engine should be licence to build the car I think,,and a Car/engine with many interesting features,,
Clark also built a marine engine with the crosshead at the END of the cylender,,,not between the cyl and crank,,,,got the weight down low for boat work,,,,,
All for now,,,Ben

The ice on the local lake went out a week ago last wed,,finally
Remember this is SOUTHERN Maine
and a lonely crokus greeted me,,,by the back door this morning,,
I'll be chasing parts in the barn shortly,
so if you need something,,hollar
Found 6 boiler injecters small,,fit a tractor or steam launch,,
well its a start,,,Ben

Here we go again,,the big building is as full as ever,I have found homes
for some stuff, both steam an' gas,I am surprised at lack of interest in some of the rare items,,as the Ross steam guage an the Stanley gauges w/block letters,
Last year I put the Stanley racer,,the one I ran at the WORCESTER HILLCLIMB
on Petes dynamometer over in Louden New-Hampshire,,near NHIS [speedway ]
and recorded 84 horse power,,AT 15 MPH,,Pete had never seen a stem car before
and was shocked to see a 1,000 # guage on the dash,,The 200# fuel guage was bad enough,,The computer was located under the floor with the rollers,,and he was concerned that the exhaust might wreck some electric part,,ESPically after
on opening the
throttle it just blew the exhaust, duct pipe/flex hose across the floor
A steam leak developed,,an we shut down,Pete was much relieved,!! !
This all was educational enough that Les Williams and I brought back a
Full wheel dyno from northern Wisconsin about 2 months ago,and have it running
here in Limerick
Meanwhile the Stanley is over at an exhibit of race cars at Owls Head Museum
just south of ROCKLAND Me,,Open year round,/closed Thanksgiving and Christmas
ONLY,, So that's an update,,more to follow,,will try to get pcs to put more
stuff on,,,,More to follow,,Cheers,,Ben

Hey thanks for helping Pat,,
To explain a little,,,Dont be disappointed in boring footage of the dyno,
as none of us had seen a dyno in operation previously, and pete had only heard of Staneys and bad rumors etc,,This vid is as shot raw footsge, nothing left out
We all had an idea of what needed to be done,,but no lesson plan existed,,
All of my crew separately and indivually thanked Pete for making this possible along with my friend Les Williams who had had several cars on Petes dyno
previously, including a ROUSH mustang / 615 hp,,Yes its noisy when gas cars run
ON THE firing up vid,,Pay especial att'n to my goggles,,
All for now,,Ben

For the few that may ask
Each chuff of the exhaust is 90 degree of crank turn
AND is 25" of foreward travel
chuf,chuf,chuf chuf,,,,that's 100" travel,,
Goes good,,,CB

I believe the frusterated racedriver was Victor Hemry on the Durracq
He won the race only to be disqualified,,further the company downgraded him
to a smaller 40hp machine,,which he also won on,,,
Same Hemry that ran a restaurant in LeMans in later years,,,,,
IF I recall,,,Ed Roy Rod Blood and others went by his place on way home from
the Anglo American tour in England in the mid 50s,,,He gave John Leathers
some momento,,John didn't want to accept it,,,but Vic insisted
He must have considerd his suiside prior,,,
All memories of storys of the past,,I did not know Hemory,,,
Wished I had,,Now glad to have a memory at all,,

Twenty years ago I should have tried it Ben. There are a few guys at the model engineering show at York PS that make ½ diameter pressure gauges for model boilers.
I have a few. One is 100 PSI and the other is 150 PSI. now I need a magnifying glass just to read them.
David had a very nice tester. He may have used it once or twice in his life.

On my gauges that are non-linear, using the operating pressure that I normally operate the gauge at, say 500#, I make sure that I zero the gauge needle at the 500# mark when I have 500# on the gauge as indicated by my gauge tester. Very seldom will you see more than 550# pressure on any of my Stanley steam gauges as beyond that pressure, my throttle levers become very difficult to open. I have seen a couple of the condensing cars bend and break their throttle linkages because they had a steam pressure surge in their steam and they tried to out muscle their throttle resistance. Broken throttle linkage on the road, 50 miles from no where is the wrong place to test your throttle linkage's strength.

Hi Ben,
Tom from Derry, NH here.
Thinking of acquiring parts for my steam bike project. 14" burner of yours sounds interesting, please describe.
Could use anything else you can think of, all I have is engine and frame.
Carbide generator with headlight and tail lights would be neat.
Take care,
Tom

Hi Coburn
Definitely interested in the 740 condenser but I only want the header tank as long as it is not cracked or holed. Is that OK to ship to New Zealand?

Plus I need a few other parts

Float for the pilot fuel level gauge
Horn button assembly
Firing up flap light assembly
A Stewart speedometer drive swivel, cable etc
All for a 1922 740

On all of our Stanleys, I always run without the engines' piston rod/stuffing box dust wrappers. When the Stanleys were new, all of the roads were either dusty or muddy. The engine needed the piston rod dust wrapper to keep the abrasive dust and mud off of the piston rods. Nowadays, our steamers hardly ever see a dirt road so now they don't need that extra protection. The only reason I would put the wrapper over the piston rods was "if I were to show the steamer at a car show".

Thanks Ben for still working on the condenser header tank I am still interested. I had to make up a special tool to hold an flat blade into the screw
Head and a thunder down socket for my air wrench to get the nuts off. I think if you are carefull a skinny cut of blade on a angle grinder would be as good. Do you by any chance have the elbow for the Botton tank on the 740 condenser.

Where's my coffee,,,did I leave it over there??
I need some sort of braser,,
Got it all apart,,the required part,,did not remove the filler neck
It was a white knuckle removal the whole way,,partly my attitude as
I have peened over beat up items,,,I know the value of NOt working too fast and needing a oxy-torch and a plainer-mill,,,
Do you guys realize how many lill screws hold that thing together,,
When Messrs Stanley were corresponding w/France,,they must have visited w/
the Bugatti works and thouroughly discussed the leading principle of MANY
mmany 10mm FLAT HEAD machine screws closely spaced to avoid distortion
and off season unemployment,,! The fine[40 pitch] [or thereabouts] thread
will aid all this,,along with tight fitting self locking lock washers,,!
AAh haa,,,
The well fitted vulomoid gasket did well but allowd JUST enough steam to
get to the machine screws to corrode the machine screws tight in the
Alumminum top tank,,by galvanic corrosion,,,which helped in a few cases to hold the screw from
turning,,,Turning is a problem as the only way to hold em is with a not
too wide screwdriver slot,,not too deep either,,and NOTHING on top to get
a hold on,,,
There are two iron plates,or rather strips that distribute the forces of
the nuts evenly,,,so it says here in fine print,,
I will?? see if I can figure how to post pics,,I you will e/m or p/m
Ill see if I can attach em for a round trip,,
A desparate emergency has just occurred,,a,fresh bag of the finest
chocolate/chip cookies,,
They are the best ever,,,AND do NOT require aging under the cellar floor
for a year,,,I think he said,,,
I'LL get a replacement can of Mystery oil tomorrow
