Does any one know what year Stanley came out with 3" gauges.

The oldest 3" Ashton Stanley gauge that I have is for our 1909 Stanley model R. Its serial number is 159-***. Any earlier 3" gauges out there?

Pat between 1904 to the end of 1907 Kit Fosters book about 2500 cars were delivered. They each had at least two gauges. How were they numbered. I have one in the 200s and one in the 300s
Interesting.

Dear Rolly, Each Ashton Valve Company gauge had a serial number which places it in the year it was manufactured. It is a lengthy serial number list. A few of the serial numbers were: for 1895- serial number 15253 to 17636. 1909 was numbered from 144018 to 163700. 1922 was 442032 to 457841. This information is found in the "must have" book The Antique American Steam Gauge by Barry Lee David. Copyrighted 2003. I was one of its contributors. This information should also be able to be found on line.

Just went through the cars at Auburn Heights. Here is some data, with manufacturing dates from the Ashton list on the SCCGB site -

115 273 - steam, made 1907, large
115 338 - fuel, made 1907, large
124 388 - fuel, made 1907, small
130 306 - steam, made 1907, large
130 755 - fuel, made 1907, large
144 432 - steam, made 1909, small

Judging by this, there's no easy rule about a cutoff date for gauge diameter. It might be complicated by car size - the 2 small gauges are on a 10hp car, the others on a 20 & a 30.

Did the 1907 gauges have flanges on the back for mounting?
