Serial number for engine

My H5 Build will use engine serial number 3105-D...could easily be 8105-D
This number shows on the cross bar per photo.
Is there a list that show me what year this engine is?...and perhaps the s/n of the car it came from?
Looking at the Stanley Register it is about a 1921 or 22 car, based upon some of those numbers, but I dont see any with suffix letter such as the xxxx-D
I am just curious as to the history of the car, who owned it, what happened to it, etc.
It currently has a 40T gear on it and thinking to go to a 48T gear based upon some advise I have gotten....should help the top end a bit.

Interesting, I haven't seen a serial # in this spot on an engine, nor a letter suffix. Looking forward to learning about this.

That is not the engine serial number. It is a casting number for the engine frame. Look further. The engine serial number should be stamped on the top side of one of these engine frame castings.

The later frames had the model # and serial #
Your photo is of the bottom bar, the number should be on the top bar, top edge just above the one you show.

Found it...had to remove some rust and dirt..... it is 740-4053.
I guess the same questions linger, any way to trace it to the original car?

I don’t know of any way, others might.

According to kit Foster book Appendix E, They only made 805 Model 740 cars.
