All dash gauges from the Locomobile and up were all nickel plated. The only odd ball in steam cars that I know of were the Whites steam cars and they were red brass.

I have a 1000 lb Stanley Motor Carriage Company gauge, serial #130802. It shows no signs of ever being installed, and is in its original wooden Ashton Valve box. It's unplated brass. No explanation, but there's a data point.

I have seen a brass replacement Stanley style Ashton gauge on eBay, and it was still in its original box. I did not remember seeing the Stanley name on the NOS brass gauge though. I have many Stanley gauges for all of the years and there is not a brass finished one in the bunch. I have also seen Stanley Ashton gauges that people have stripped the nickel off of. They didn't get all of the nickel off of them. To be historically correct, using the nickel finished gauge for any Stanley model would be correct.

Given the choice, I would stay with the nickel gauges on all models of Stanleys. Let's see if Coburn Benson can chime in here with his infinite wisdom. He was a kid when the Stanley steamers were just used cars.

To me latheyth's pictures shows nickel plated gauges where the nickel is more or less rubbed off over time....most evident on the lower one, but on the upper ones we can see traces of plating also...
