High-pressure Stanley gauges

In doing some racing research, I came across this clipping about the Giant's Despair hillclimb of 1907 -

"Then the Stanley steamer was announced and electrified the spectators along the route as it sped up over the hill like a bird. This little steamer is an extremely light machine and has an enormous boiler capacity. It is told that when the start was made the indicator showed a steam pressure of 1,200 pounds to the square inch. It was rated as a 20-h.p. machine and was driven by D. Walter Harper."

How wouldd they have know it was 1200 PSI? I've never seen a Stanley gauge indicated for more than 1000.
