Musker Lorry

<HTML>In my readings I came across an article about a Musker steam lorry from England with specifications that intrigued me. The year was 1901 and they produced 2 versions, one with a solid fired boiler and the other was oil fired. Both used a monotube boiler and automatic controls with great success. The solid fired boiler used steam for the draft while the oil burner used a steam motor for fan forced draft and to pump feed water as well as fuel. The vaporizer was a patented design of their own and it mixed the fuel vapors and the air before reaching the combustion chamber. The engine employed poppet valves and was of robust design. I was wondering if there were any earlier steam vehicles to use forced draft oil fired burners ? Does anyone know what kind of ignition device they used ? Any idea what the vaporizer looked like ?

I doubt their designs are worth duplicating. The firm did not last beyond 1904.</HTML>

<HTML>David,

Thanks, I was just wondering about how they did it. While we were on the subject of lorries with poppet valves, you had expressed interest in a previous post, the Garretts started using them in 1926 when they went to 6 wheelers. The brakes weren't the best and driven faster than the law allowed (12 mph), the drivers would throw the lorry into reverse and often break the Joy valve gear previously used. The engine was a twin cylinder of 4 1/2 inch bore and 7 1/2 stroke using 4 valves per cylinder, 2 inlet and 2 exhaust activated by a sliding, skew gear driven camshaft on 275 psi steam. By the end of 1928 14 of these 12 ton payload vehicles had been sold with 42 in 1929,47 in 1930 and 11 in 1931. Taxation based on unladen weight hurt the breed.

<HTML> "Its Time", said big Gough Whitlam... and it IS... for high efficiency steam lorries using decent pressure and coke or bagasse or alcoholfuels.

We are fighting the 3rd. OIL war; or is it 2 with intermissions to get lollies?</HTML>
