Derr boiler-information please

<HTML>I see that the Modelworks Locomobile replica is to be fitted with a Derr or Winslow boiler rather than the standard firetube.

My only knowledge of this boiler is from a picture I saw ages ago. It seems to be a collection of watertube grids in a rectangular casing.

Can anyone kindly give me a brief description and tell me:

a) how does it compare weight for weight/size for size with an equivalent Locomobile/Stanley firetube in terms of steam output?

b) Is it any good?

I imagine it would be a quicker steam raiser but lack the reserve capacity owing to less water content.</HTML>

<HTML>The Derr boiler as used in the Stanley, as a replacement boiler was comprised of ten grids with each grid having ten tubes at 10 degrees. There was a space just above the second tube from the burner for the superheater comprised of sixty feet of three-eights pipe. The boiler was bit heaver then a standard 18” high boiler but in my opinion is a far better boiler.
You can read about it in the book the Modern Steam Car by Floyd Clymer

<HTML>Thanks for the info.
It sounds like a distant relative of the Babcock & Wilcox.
