Overman automobile steam pump

<HTML>A friend of mine picked up a steam pump, from an oldtimer's shop, who claimed it was off a Stanley Steamer. It is a one cylinder steam pump, about one foot long. It has a patent date of May 21, 1901 #714 and is stamped Overman Automobile Co. A quick search of Google brought a posting by Peter Wuringer whose 1900 Locomobile has an Overman pump. Were the early Stanleys equipped with such a pump? Was the "Oldtimer" right in saying it was off a Stanley? Thanks for responding to this posting. Gary</HTML>

<HTML>Gary,
Not standard equipment on Locomobiles.
They were sold as an accessory for early buggy steam cars.
Overman also made a companion steam air pump for fuel pressure.

<HTML>Overman steam pumps were quite usual in Locomobiles since about 1903 as Victor and Overman Company was taken over by Locomobile Company. They were used either for air as for feedwater. Please contact Scott Jamieson [Scott.Jamieson@sympatico.ca], he is a specialist in Overman pumps. Peter</HTML>

<HTML>Dear Gary,

Peter Wuringer kindly forwarded this email to me. I just sent Peter a complete package of Overman Victor steam pump info including drawings and patent copies. The Overman 'Victor' used two pumps; one for water and one for air. This automobile had a pressed steel body not a wooden one like the Stanley and Locomobile!! By 1903 Locomobile had control of the Overman firm and one of the patents they utilized was the one for the Victor pumps. They must have made money from it as they managed to get it re-issued. They were then selling it as a retro-fit to any steam car owner who wished to fit one which is probably how it came to be on your Stanley. Incidently, the design of the car, the pumps and many other facets and accessories for the Overman Company were all designed and patented by James Herbert Bullard of Springfield, MA 1842-1914 which is how I came into all this information. I have written two books on the firearms of J.H. Bullard (Bullard Arms in 1988 and Bullard Firearms 2002 which includes his pioneering automotive work in conjunction with A.H. Overman of Victor Bicycle fame. If you require more info feel free to ask. Happy Thanksgiving.

<HTML>I have bought the compressor side (piston diameter 1.5 inch and stroke about 2 inch) of a victor pump. Can you tell me if this an air or water pump and do you have drawings to manufacture the steam side.
I have seen the drawings of "Self propelled vehicles" by JE HOMANS page 525 (boiler feeders)</HTML>
