<HTML>Wire winding of pressure vessels started in the early1800 I believe on reinforcing cannons.
The Stanleys used it on there boilers. The ASME code has a section in it for wire winding unfired pressure vessels, but I do not have a copy of that section.
Manufacturers still use the method today. See the second paragraph on the attached web site.
