Leaking engine crankcase oil

<HTML>I just returned from a 4 day tour in Canada with our 1916 Stanley Mt. Wagon. I have had a problem in the past of excessive oil leaks from the engine while in use, but no leaks while it is parked. Oil was leaking while I drove it, escaping out of the crankcase everywhere it could think of. After a good run of about 100 miles, I had to replace about a gallon back into the crankcase. On this trip I intentionally left off the crank case belly band dust cover covering the piston rod stuffing boxes. After about 140 miles, I didn't loose any oil out of the crankcase that I could measure. I deduct that steam escaping from the piston rods was pressurizing the crankcase and blowing the oil out. With the copper belly band left off, the leaking steam now escapes more easily to the atmosphere. My piston rod packing is holding up well and it sounds like it is sealing. Do you suppose that the Stanleys when they were new, had this oil problem too?</HTML>
