Louver paint on a model 71 Stanley hood

I am masking the hood louvers on my 1910 model 71 to paint the black on the raised areas. I have seen several styles of masking...squared off corners, rounded corners, the black starting at the base of the radius and the black starting a bit up on the radius. Can anyone supply photos or a good description of how it is done on their car. Are there any photos around of cars with original paint where this could be seen?
thanks

There are very few barn fresh cas around that have original paint. I have photos of four and there all one color, no detailing or bold highlighting of trim. The louver are there only to stiffen the flat sheet matel panel.
Paint them the way you want. Every restored car I’ve seen is different.

I have a copy of the 1908(?)Stanley EX with two army soldiers sitting in it. It is an original scene from about 1910 and the hood is clearly striped with black louvers with pinstriping on them. It is much like what Carl Amsley painted from about 1955 and on. Looks like it has 1908 E & J cowl lamps and Rushmore headlights. An automatic brass framed windshild has been added too. I have a 1910 vintage 1909 Stanley R photo that is reproduced from a glass plate negative. The hood pinstriping is very clear and the louver pinstriping has distinct right angled pinstripes on black painted louvers. I have an original 1909 photo of a 1909 Model M with painted hood louvers and pin striping like the rest. I have a 1912 Stanley model 87 vintage photo with painted louvers and the same pinstriping. Photo taken in 1915. I do not know about pre 1908, but I am sure that post 1907 all had painted hood louvers with pinstriping. They all used the same format in their striping.

Dear Rolly, That's the same photo that I have. I got it from Bob Sullivan 10 years ago. I eventually posted it to this website. Seems that everyone has had a print of it at one time or another. If I can scan a big enough of a file of that EX, I will send it to you. My copy of the print is 8" X 10". The pin striping and black louvers are very plain in my EX photo.

Dear Rolly, I scanned it and then I cropped it to an 8 " X 10 " photo. It came out a smaller file than I like but I can still see the pin striping. The black louvers aren't as contrasting in my copy here but the pinstriping looks good.

One more photo of a 1909 Stanley R hood in about 1910. Car was owned by George Haynes of Pertersburg, N.Y. who also took the photo. Black hood louvers and plenty of pin striping.

Thanks very much to Pat and Rolly for all the help.

I think the original Model R photo from Pat clearly shows the striping outlining the black on 3 sides. It does not appear that the black goes higher or further to the rear that the stripe. Perhaps Stanley changed the painting plan along the way but I will use this style.

I also would like to thank Loren Burch and Art Hart along with Pat and Rolly for their patient answers to my many, many Stanley questions. The car just completed at 60 mile drive with no problems!

Here is the same EX, different drivers. Looks like a photographer was busy taking photos of the soldiers for them to send back home.

I can help you with this. The Model 70 and 71 for 1910 and 1911 are the same. We have restored 2 Model 70's and have documentation on both models. I think it fair to say we are somewhat fanatical about the correctness of the restorations of these machines. Allen Blazick
