Engine clearance

Does anyone have observations or opinions on what different cylinder clearances used for various steam engines.

More for high speed?

Less for low speed?

More required for saftey of operation?

Piston to cylinder clearances?

Anyone know if the clearances were made larger for later Stanley engines or less?

Compounds usually seem to have a larger clearance in the hp cylinder due to high back pressure.

The average seems to be around 10% or so.

Some single acting high speed engines around 5%, mabey dangerous for condensation?
