....pictures of my Brooks, presently under repair, the lubrication system had obviously quit, as things were dry as a bone, this caused the "D" valves to chew deeply into the valve face on the block, to the extent the valve stem had to spring sideways for the D valve to seat at all. This is the worst wear I have ever seen on any steam engine.
The dark stain is from penetrating oil, The only way to salvage this block is to put a false face back for the valves.
