Oil free steam engine

<HTML>To all:

A German company, Spilling, has apparently succeeded in producing
an oil-free reciprocating steam engine. Their web site is:

They offer it for sale and a number of installations (electrical co-generation)
are already operational. So, their engine is already in production and not merely in experimental stage, such as those proposed by Enginion and Ranotor.

These engines can operate with steam temperatures up to 450 C
(842 F) and pressure up to 60 bar (870 psi).

Their design is conventional : dual acting with piston valves.

Hoping that this will be of some help.

Best regards,

Jean Vezina</HTML>

<HTML>Jean,
This is a most interesting company. I e-mailed them to see if they will sell us plate stock for making Wankel seals.
Their engine is a nice design with a large piston valve. Good work.
Many thanks for finding this.

<HTML>Jean,
Thanks so much for this find, engine appears to be very short stroke and connecting rod length compared to bore, modular design is very functional. Jim, I tried to find their questionnaire or reply and had no success---how did you do it???
Maybe Netscape doesn't give me that choice!!
Thanks, George</HTML>

<HTML>Jim Tangeman built a small lubrication-free engine some years ago. It is a single cylinder uniflow double acting design of 1 inch bore and 1 1/8 inch stroke. We put it in his boat (about a 15 foot dory) and ran it at Klamath Lake one year. It easily drove the boat beyond hull speed running on steam up to 1400 degrees F. from a monotube steam generator. I can say that the design needs more develpoment in the area of the piston/piston rod. Engine has a D valve made of Graphitar running on a stellite face. Piston and rings also graphitar.</HTML>
