Stanley Sold at Auction

The 1917 Stanley (listed in the last Sprague register as a 1917 with serial number 172817) advertised in an Illinois auction flyer in the last Stanley Museum Quarterly reportedly sold for $90,000.00. The auctioneer has asked if this is an auction record for a circa 1917 condensing Stanley. Does anyone know if this is a record, or what the record for a similar car might be?

Dear Jim, $90 K is a world's record for condensing Stanleys. I have been following sale prices very closely and this is the first condensing Stanley that has sold for over $60,000 that I know of. Most nicely restored condensing Stanleys have been sellong for at $60,000 or just below that. Nicely restored non condensing Stanleys have recently been selling from around $100 K to a little over $160 K.

This car is presumably a 1919. Its actual serial number, per telephone conversation with the previous owner's son before the sale, is 19278.

The information we got is that the high bidder was a museum in Kansas. Don't know which museum, but they obviously have more money than our museum.
